Wave focusing by submerged islands and gravitational analogues

چکیده
We study water waves propagating over a smooth obstacle in fluid of varying depth, motivated by the observation that submerged islands ocean act as effective lenses increase amplitude and destructive power tsunami near focal points. show substantial height (compared to depth) lead strong focusing their immediate vicinity, generate caustics either cusp or butterfly type. highlight similarities differences with (high-frequency) gravitational neutron star. In linear regime, comparison is made precise through an effective-spacetime description island-fluid system. This then put practical use: identify solving Raychaudhuri equation (a transport equation) along rays metric. Next, scattering processes are examined detail (i.e., deflection angle, phase shifts, amplitudes) using numerical simulations analytical techniques, including eikonal approximation its generalisation form Gaussian beam approximation. techniques capture key features simulations. Finally, we extend dispersive demonstrating essential robust settings. paves way for future exploration controlled laboratory set-up.

Model of thermal wave-front distortion in interferometric gravitational- wave detectors. I. Thermal focusing
We develop a steady-state analytical and numerical model of the optical response of power-recycled Fabry– Perot Michelson laser gravitational-wave detectors to nonlinear thermal focusing in optical substrates. We assume that the thermal distortions are small enough that we can represent all intracavity fields as linear combinations of basis functions derived from the eigenmodes of a Fabry–Perot...
متن کاملInternal wave focusing by annular forcing
A linear theory is proposed for the focusing of internal waves generated by the oscillations of a horizontal annulus that is slender, namely of large aspect ratio, but otherwise arbitrary. The theory exploits the separation of scales and is applied to two configurations: a circular torus, and circular Gaussian topography at the ocean bottom. Both complete and partial annuli are considered. Focu...
متن کاملWave Reflection at Submerged Breakwaters
Several types of structures are used in Coastal Engineering with the aim of preventing shoreline erosion, such as groynes, detached breakwaters, submerged breakwaters, etc. Submerged breakwaters have the advantage of their minimal visual impact, which has made them ever more popular (Chang & Liou, 2007). When the incoming waves impinge on a submerged breakwater, a process of energy transformati...
متن کاملGravitational Wave Scintillation by a Stellar Cluster
General Relativity predicts the existence of gravitational waves that propagate in the vacuum with the speed of light. Analogously to electromagnetism, it is expected that gravitational waves might also be scattered by intervening particles 1,2,3 and micro-lensed by compact objects along the line of sight 4,5,6. Moreover, gravitational waves will be diffracted as they pass through a distributio...
